Wes Montgomery meets a full string section on Bumpin', reissued here in the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series on 180 gram vinyl.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs in March and May of 1965 and released that year, the album was produced by Creed Taylor and arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky. It became the first Montgomery record to reach the Billboard album chart, and its lush orchestral setting became a template for much of his Verve work. The rhythm section of Roger Kellaway on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass and Grady Tate on drums keeps the strings grounded, with Candido adding congas and bongos.

The title track is a smouldering Montgomery original, his famous thumb-picked octaves gliding over a relaxed, swaying pulse. Dizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" gets a graceful, Latin-tinged treatment, while "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "Here's That Rainy Day" show just how lyrical his playing could be, every phrase sung through the guitar. Sebesky's own "Musty" closes the original running order.

It is mood music in the best sense, romantic and polished yet unmistakably jazz at its core. For anyone who loves Montgomery's octave sound or the golden age of Verve, this heavyweight pressing is a gorgeous way to hear it.
