Descendents' Bonus Fat is ten minutes of pure, caffeinated origin story, collecting the earliest recordings from the South Bay band that helped write the rulebook for pop-punk.

Released on New Alliance in 1985, it pairs the 1981 Fat EP with the band's 1979 debut single, plus a track pulled from a 1981 compilation. The single predates Milo Aukerman's arrival, with guitarist Frank Navetta and bassist Tony Lombardo taking turns at the mic, while the Fat EP catches Milo and drummer Bill Stevenson's crew lurching into full-tilt hardcore. Hearing the two side by side is like watching the band discover its own personality in real time.

The Fat material is gloriously bratty. "My Dad Sucks" says everything it needs to in well under a minute, "I Like Food" is over before you have finished laughing, and "Weinerschnitzel" lasts all of ten seconds, the funniest blink in the catalogue. Then the debut single swerves somewhere else entirely: "Ride the Wild" is surf-flavoured power pop with hooks for days, the first glimpse of the melodic instincts that would define everything after it.

For anyone who worships Milo Goes to College, this is the essential prequel, rough, hilarious and impossibly fast. Plain black vinyl suits a record this proudly unpretentious, and it belongs beside the band's later classics.
