Before the classic albums and the coffee-fuelled legend, there was Bonus Fat, the scrappy first chapter of Descendents, served up here on brown and yellow vinyl.

The South Bay band issued it on New Alliance in 1985, rounding up the 1981 Fat EP, their 1979 debut single and a stray track from a 1981 compilation. The cover pairs Frank Navetta's original Fat EP illustration with a caricature of Milo Aukerman, the bespectacled face that would follow the band for decades. Bill Stevenson's drumming is already a force of nature, and the energy never dips across its brief running time.

Side one is hardcore at its most gleefully juvenile. "Mr. Bass" barrels along for two minutes of manic, melodic thrash, "Hey Hey" is a sprint with a chorus attached, and "Global Probing" closes the side with a minute of nervy, wound-up snark. Side two rewinds to 1979: "It's a Hectic World", sung by bassist Tony Lombardo, is wiry, surf-tinged power pop from a band still finding its feet, and the contrast with what came after is half the fun.

It is a tiny record with an outsized influence, the seed of a sound countless pop-punk bands would build careers on. This brown and yellow pressing gives a well-loved punk relic a bold, eye-catching new coat of paint.
