Katie Crutchfield's first record as Waxahatchee comes swirled in red and white, a fitting look for American Weekend, a 2012 debut full of bruised hearts and small-town ache.

Named after a creek in her native Alabama, Waxahatchee began as a bare-bones solo project after years of playing punk with her twin sister Allison in bands like P.S. Eliot. This lo-fi debut, released on Don Giovanni, is about as intimate as songwriting gets, mostly a voice and an acoustic guitar carrying lyrics that feel lifted straight from a diary.

Catfish sets the tone, Crutchfield's voice cracking around images of loneliness and longing. Be Good is a quiet standout, a hushed plea that pulls you close, and Grass Stain turns a tiny detail into something heartbreaking. Noccalula, which shares its name with an Alabama landmark, closes the record on a note of fragile grace.

There's no polish here and no need for any. The rawness is the point, every strum and breath laid bare.

Crutchfield has since become one of the most celebrated songwriters in American indie and alt-country, but this is where that unflinching voice first rang out. Anyone who fell for Saint Cloud or Tigers Blood will find the roots of those records right here.
