UFO's Will the Last Man Standing (Turn Out the Light) gathers the British hard rock veterans' finest hours across two discs, from the Michael Schenker years to the slicker mid-1980s.

Few bands influenced so many guitar heroes while staying slightly under the radar. Fronted by the unflappable Phil Mogg, UFO built their reputation in the 1970s on muscular riffs and huge choruses, cutting a run of albums that hard rock and metal players still study closely. This set draws from their most successful stretch, first compiled in 2019 and trimmed here for vinyl.

It opens where the legend really begins, with "Doctor Doctor" and "Rock Bottom," the twin pillars of the young Schenker's arrival. "Too Hot to Handle" and "Lights Out" catch the band at their swaggering best, all gang vocals and razor-edged leads, while later cuts show how they adapted to the shinier production of the following decade.

Pete Way's rumbling bass and Andy Parker's no-nonsense drumming anchor the classic-era tracks, and Mogg's voice, more wry storyteller than screamer, gives even the heaviest tracks a knowing British wit.

For newcomers it is the perfect primer, and for longtime fans it is a reminder of just how many killer songs this band had up its sleeve.
