On limited-edition 180-gram yellow vinyl, Fisherman's Blues captures The Waterboys falling head over heels for Irish folk music.

Released in 1988, it marked a dramatic turn away from the soaring big music of This Is the Sea. Mike Scott had settled in Ireland, and with fiddler Steve Wickham steering him toward traditional music, the band recorded in Dublin and out in the west of the country, soaking up the spirit of late-night sessions along the way.

The title track is pure joy, a fiddle-led anthem about longing to be free on the open water, while And a Bang on the Ear is a warm, rambling roll-call of old loves. Their take on Van Morrison's Sweet Thing glows with devotion, and The Stolen Child sets W.B. Yeats' poem to a hushed, spellbinding arrangement.

The playing feels gloriously unrehearsed, with fiddle and mandolin swirling around Scott's impassioned vocals, and it sounds like a band discovering something new in real time. Rock energy and folk tradition meet as equals, and neither one gives an inch.
