Mike Scott went digging through mislabelled reels and came back with Atlantic Rain: The Lost Fisherman's Blues Recordings, a 3LP set of Waterboys music nobody had heard.

Fisherman's Blues, released in 1988, was the record where The Waterboys swapped the widescreen big music of their early albums for fiddles, mandolins and Irish folk tradition. The sessions behind it were famously sprawling, and a six-disc box in 2013 was supposed to be the final word. Then Scott found around 80 reels that had been filed under the wrong names, and dozens of forgotten performances along with them.

These 25 tracks include originals that never made the album, among them Come Back to Galway and The Man with the Wind at His Heels, both stretched out with the band playing like a pub session gone gloriously long. The covers are a revelation too: a heartfelt Knockin' on Heaven's Door, a reimagined When Doves Cry and a 13-minute run at Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band that sounds like the end of a very good night.

For anyone who fell for Fisherman's Blues, this feels like opening a door in a familiar house and finding a whole wing you never knew existed. Raw, joyful and alive, it captures a band in the thick of a creative fever.
