John Darnielle swapped his guitar for keys on Goths, The Mountain Goats' 2017 love letter to the black-clad kids of the 1980s, presented here as a 2LP set with a digital download card.

It's a record about people who loved goth before it was a fashion statement and kept loving it after the spotlight moved on: the bands that never broke, the fans in suburban bedrooms, the scene veterans quietly growing older. John Darnielle writes about them with real tenderness and a wry grin, never condescension.

With no guitar on board beyond Peter Hughes' bass, the songs lean on Darnielle's piano and Rhodes and Jon Wurster's nimble drumming, with new full-time member Matt Douglas adding saxophone, flute and woodwind arrangements that give everything a smoky, late-night warmth. Recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville with Brandon Eggleston producing, it sounds lush and unhurried.

Rain in Soho opens with a slow, stately grandeur that feels like a procession, and Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds imagines the Sisters of Mercy frontman heading home, told with affection and gentle humour. We Do It Different on the West Coast sketches a rival scene across the country, and Wear Black turns a dress code into a sly, swaying anthem.

For anyone who still owns a Bauhaus shirt, this one lands very close to home.
