Four outlaws, one stage: The Highwaymen's Live at Nassau Coliseum captures Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson in full flight in 1990.

The supergroup came together in the mid-1980s almost by chance, and the title song of their first album gave them a name. On the road they became something even richer than the records, four legends swapping lead vocals, ribbing one another and handing round the classics that had made each of them famous. This single LP distils a night on Long Island into a lean, hit-packed set.

Highwayman opens with each man taking a verse of Jimmy Webb's tale of a restless soul returning through the ages, and from there the songbook flows freely. Cash rumbles through Ring of Fire, Kristofferson's Me and Bobby McGee gets a weathered, communal reading, and Luckenbach, Texas finds Waylon and Willie leaning into the easy rapport of old friends. On the Road Again brings the evening home with a grin.

Hearing these voices side by side, gravel against honey against grit, is a reminder of how much history shared that stage. For country fans, it is a warm, rowdy document of four giants enjoying one another's company, and a night that will never come around again.
