The Distillers' Coral Fang lands on red and black splatter vinyl, a fittingly bloodstained look for Brody Dalle's ferocious 2003 major-label leap.

The Los Angeles punks had cut their teeth with two raw, snarling records on Hellcat, and Coral Fang was where they went big without going soft. Dalle, born in Melbourne and already an icon of the scene, was writing through a very public period of upheaval, and the songs crackle with that tension, equal parts heartbreak and fury. She turns private wreckage into lyrics that feel both confessional and defiant.

Gil Norton, the producer behind the Pixies' Doolittle, gave the band a bigger, darker sound, all grinding guitars and a heavy, wall-of-noise heft. Drain the Blood opens the record with a howl, The Hunger stretches out into a slow-burning, brooding epic, and Beat Your Heart Out snaps along with sharp, catchy menace. Through it all, Dalle's voice, a gravel-and-glass roar, sits right at the centre.

More than two decades later, Coral Fang remains one of the defining punk records of its era, a blueprint for countless bands who wanted their hooks with teeth. The splatter pressing suits it perfectly, messy and loud, exactly how this album should look spinning on the platter.
