Sweaty, lurid and gloriously trashy, Smell of Female captures The Cramps live at New York's Peppermint Lounge in 1983, pressed here on red vinyl as a UK import.

By the early eighties, Lux Interior and Poison Ivy had built The Cramps into the ultimate cult attraction, a band that fused rockabilly, garage rock and B-movie horror into the sound now known as psychobilly. This six-track mini-album shows why their live sets became the stuff of legend, catching the group in a packed club with the volume and the menace turned all the way up.

Thee Most Exalted Potentate of Love kicks things off with a sleazy, swaggering stomp, Lux howling like a man possessed. You Got Good Taste is a gleeful, snotty rave-up, while I Ain't Nuthin' But a Gorehound revels in the band's love of horror camp and cheap thrills. Their wild reading of Psychotic Reaction closes the set with feedback-laced abandon, Ivy's guitar slicing through the chaos like a switchblade.

Thoroughly unhinged from start to finish, this is The Cramps doing what they did best, and the red vinyl adds just the right touch of lurid flash. Short, nasty and endlessly replayable, it remains one of the great documents of a band that made bad taste an art form.
