Phish's LP On LP series gives a single jam a whole slab of vinyl, and volume eight pairs a marathon AC/DC Bag with Gumbo.

Recorded at the BSU Pavilion in Boise, Idaho, in 1999, this performance catches the band deep in their late-nineties exploratory phase, when even a tightly composed early song could stretch into something unrecognisable. Paul Languedoc recorded the show and Jon Altschiller mixed it from the multitrack tapes.

AC/DC Bag fills the first side on its own at more than 24 minutes. The familiar Gamehendge riff and story give way to a long, searching improvisation that stood as the longest and most exploratory version the band had played up to that point, building, dissolving and rebuilding with real patience. The second side gives Gumbo just over 13 minutes of loose, funky room to move, and the two pieces connect without a break.

The format suits this kind of music perfectly. There is nothing to skip and nowhere to rush, only the chance to follow a jam the way the crowd did that night.

For fans who collect the series, this is a strong entry, and for anyone curious about why Phish jams inspire such devotion, it makes a vivid case.
