Limited turquoise 180-gram vinyl from Holland brings back The Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday, the 1967 album where the band stopped leaning on folk-rock and started following their curiosity.

With producer Gary Usher at the desk, the group was changing fast. Gene Clark had gone, and bassist Chris Hillman suddenly emerged as a songwriter and singer, bringing country touches and a fresh melodic voice. Roger McGuinn's fascination with jazz, space and electronics was blooming, and David Crosby was pushing into stranger, dreamier territory.

So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star opens with a wry swipe at the pop machine, complete with screaming fans and a trumpet solo from Hugh Masekela, the first brass ever heard on a Byrds record. Have You Seen Her Face shows off Hillman's knack for a jangling hook, and C.T.A.-102 drifts off toward a distant quasar with oscillators and alien voices. Their reading of Bob Dylan's My Back Pages, which gave the album its title, ranks among the finest Dylan covers they ever cut.

It's a bridge between eras, with ringing twelve-string, psychedelic experiments and early hints of country rock all living under one roof.

Critics have come to rank it among the band's very best, and this bright pressing makes a fine excuse to hear why.
