Two sides of Sun Ra's Chicago years share one limited 180-gram Spanish import, pairing the standards-heavy Sound Sun Pleasure!! with the cosmic swing of We Travel the Space Ways.

Sound Sun Pleasure!! is a curious one in the Ra catalogue. Cut in 1959 at the same sessions that produced Jazz in Silhouette, it sat on the shelf until his Saturn label finally issued it in 1970. What makes it unusual is the repertoire: rather than interplanetary originals, the band leans mostly into jazz standards, with Hattie Randolph stepping up to the microphone.

John Gilmore, Marshall Allen and Pat Patrick are all in the reed section, and the playing is lush and slyly off-kilter, the horns voiced in ways only Ra would dream up. "'Round Midnight" glows with late-night mystery, "Back in Your Own Backyard" has an easy bounce, and even a show tune like "I Could Have Danced All Night" gets bent gently out of shape.

The second side moves into We Travel the Space Ways, issued on Saturn in 1967 and drawn mostly from 1960 recordings. The Duke Ellington roots show through the haze here, and the chanted title track is a playful invitation to leave the planet behind.

Together they make a neat snapshot of an Arkestra caught between big-band tradition and the outer reaches.
