Sun Ra's Jazz in Silhouette lands on blue 180 gram vinyl as a limited Spain import, complete with a bonus track and all the cosmic swing of the Chicago years.

Recorded at the El Saturn studio in Chicago in 1959 and released that year on Ra's own Saturn label, produced by Alton Abraham, the album captures the Arkestra just before its leap into the avant-garde explorations of the New York period. The same sessions also yielded the whole of Sound Sun Pleasure!! Critics have long singled it out as one of his finest early records, the place where his love of swing and his otherworldly imagination meet on equal terms.

The music balances big band polish with strange, beautiful detours. "Enlightenment", co-written with trumpeter Hobart Dotson, became a fixture of Arkestra concerts for decades, often with the whole band chanting along. "Ancient Aiethopia" stretches out for nine hypnotic minutes, "Saturn" swings with bright, punchy horn charts, and the epic "Blues at Midnight" rolls past eleven minutes, giving the soloists plenty of room to roam.

It is the perfect entry point for anyone curious about Sun Ra but wary of the deep space freakouts that followed in the 1960s. Swinging and mysterious, it sounds like a dispatch from another planet that happens to know its Ellington.
