Scrappy, hissy and quietly brilliant, Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted is the debut that wrote the rulebook for nineties indie rock.

Released on Matador in 1992, the album was made on a shoestring at drummer Gary Young's studio in Stockton, California, where Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg turned tape hiss, detuned guitars and cryptic wordplay into something oddly beautiful. Malkmus's slacker drawl hid real melodic smarts, and Young's erratic drumming gave the whole thing a wonderfully unpredictable lurch. Its influence on lo-fi and college rock is hard to overstate, and generations of bands have chased its effortless, shrugging cool without ever quite catching it.

Summer Babe (Winter Version) opens with a sweet, lopsided hook that sticks for days, while Trigger Cut/Wounded-Kite at :17 tumbles along on a sing-song melody and a gloriously wry chorus. In the Mouth a Desert grinds and sways with lazy menace, and Here slows everything down into a weary, unexpectedly moving ballad that might be the band's most tender moment.

On vinyl, the fuzz and feedback feel exactly as alive as they should. It is a cornerstone of any indie collection and a record that rewards loud, frequent spins, preferably with the windows open and nowhere urgent to be. It still sounds like the future arriving slightly out of tune.
