Mudhoney's Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge returns for its 30th anniversary as a 2LP set in a gatefold jacket with a poster, and the fuzz still hasn't settled.

First released in 1991, the Seattle band's second album arrived just as grunge was about to go global. Major labels were circling, but Mudhoney stayed loyal to Sub Pop, and the record's strong sales helped keep the cash-strapped label afloat. The band went the opposite way from the glossy productions on the horizon, recording with Conrad Uno at his Egg Studios on cheap tape and an 8-track desk.

That scrappy approach suits them perfectly. Let It Slide tears out of the gate with Steve Turner's filthy guitar tone and Mark Arm's gleeful snarl, while Good Enough eases back into a loose, swaggering groove. Into the Drink is pure garage punk adrenaline, the sound of four friends trying to knock each other over.

Underneath the noise sits a band with a real sense of humour and a deep love of sixties garage, Stooges sleaze and loose-limbed rock 'n' roll, with Matt Lukin and Dan Peters keeping everything rumbling along.

Even the title, a music-class mnemonic for the lines of the treble clef, says plenty about their wit. Three decades on, this remains one of the essential records of the Seattle explosion.
