The Very Best of Miles Davis: The Warner Bros. Sessions 1985-1991 sums up the restless final chapter of a jazz giant across two LPs.

After three decades at Columbia, Miles signed with Warner Bros. in the mid-1980s and embraced drum machines, synthesizers and pop songwriting without a hint of apology. First compiled in 2007, this set follows that era from Tutu through soundtrack work, collaborations and live dates, right up to the hip-hop experiment of Doo-Bop.

"Tutu" opens with Marcus Miller's prowling bass and stark programming, Miles' muted horn cutting through like a blade. "Mr. Pastorius" is a tender tribute to the late bassist, "Trumpet Cleaning" pairs him with composer Michel Legrand, and "The Doo-Bop Song" finds him riding a head-nodding beat with total ease.

Quincy Jones joins him for a moving look back at the Gil Evans arrangements of his past, and the final side captures his late touring band live, stretching out on old favourites and newer material alike. Together they make a strong case that Miles never stopped listening to the world around him.

Purists once dismissed this period, but time has been kind to it. Here is the sound of a legend still taking risks to the very end, gathered in one tidy, well-sequenced package.
