Twenty years on, I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child still sounds like Manchester Orchestra arriving fully formed, and this 20th anniversary edition spreads it across two colored discs.

Released in 2006, the Atlanta band's debut was made with no label behind it, written by Andy Hull and produced by Dan Hannon. Word of mouth did the heavy lifting: the album was picked up for a wider release through Favorite Gentlemen and Canvasback, and the road soon led to tours with Kings of Leon and a first national television spot on Letterman. A decade later the band played it front to back at The Stuffing, their annual Thanksgiving show in Atlanta.

The sound is all push and pull. "Wolves at Night" lays a churchy organ over a downtuned, fuzz-caked riff, while "Where Have You Been?" and "I Can Barely Breathe" stretch into droning, cinematic territory, songs that start as near-whispers and swell into walls of sound. Quieter moments like "Sleeper 1972" show the tender streak that still runs through Hull's writing, wrestling with faith and mortality in plain, unguarded language.

The second disc revisits all eleven songs in reimagined versions, a chance to hear the seasoned band answer its younger self. Fans who found Manchester Orchestra through later records will hear exactly where the ache began.
