Madlib flips through his crates like a film editor on Beat Konducta Vol. 1-2: Movie Scenes, a dizzying instrumental beat tape spread across blue and red vinyl.

Released in 2006 on Stones Throw, the album launched his long-running Beat Konducta series, later continued with volumes devoted to Indian records and to his friend J Dilla. Madlib, the Oxnard, California producer born Otis Jackson Jr., built these short, cinematic sketches from soul, funk, jazz and soundtrack samples, arranging them like scenes from an imaginary movie with no dialogue.

The Comeback (Madlib) sets the tone with dusty drums and a swaggering loop, and Electric Company (Voltage-Watts) crackles with warped, buzzing energy. Black Mozart (Opus II) reaches for something grander, while African Walk (Zamunda) moves with a loping, hypnotic stride that sticks in the head for days.

Most pieces last barely a minute or two, so ideas arrive and vanish before you can catch your breath, and the joy is in the sequencing, the way one groove bleeds into the next like a mixtape assembled by a restless genius.
