Fifty years on, Leftoverture still sounds like the moment Kansas cracked the code, and this 50th anniversary edition returns it on gold 140 gram vinyl.

The band's fourth album, released in 1976, was recorded at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana, with producer Jeff Glixman. After three records of cult admiration, Kansas finally found the formula that married its prog-rock ambition to real radio appeal. Guitarist and keyboardist Kerry Livgren wrote most of the material, with singer Steve Walsh co-writing three songs, and the result went on to sell millions, making them one of the biggest American rock bands of the late seventies.

"Carry On Wayward Son" opens with that famous a cappella harmony before crashing into one of classic rock's most recognizable riffs, a song about doubt and perseverance that never loses its punch. "The Wall" is a slow-building, majestic ballad that showcases Walsh's soaring voice, while "Miracles Out of Nowhere" weaves Robby Steinhardt's violin through a dense, shifting arrangement. The album closes with "Magnum Opus", a six-part suite that lets the whole band flex its chops, shifting moods and meters with total confidence.

Leftoverture turned a heartland band into stadium headliners, and the gold pressing suits an album that became a classic rock touchstone.
