Joe Hisaishi's Howl's Moving Castle: Symphonic Suite gives the music of Studio Ghibli's lumbering, magical fortress the full concert hall treatment on a single LP.

Released in 2004, months before Hayao Miyazaki's film reached cinemas, the suite finds Hisaishi conducting the Czech Philharmonic through ten movements built around the story of Sophie, the young hatter cursed with old age, and the vain, fragile wizard who takes her in. By then his partnership with Miyazaki stretched back two decades, and the confidence shows in every bar. This is a composer who knows exactly how to make an orchestra feel like changing weather.

Mysterious World opens the set with a hush before the strings bloom outward, and The Wizard of the Moving Castle gathers a sense of grandeur as the full ensemble swells around it. The Wizard's Waltz sways with an old-world romance that feels made for a candlelit ballroom, while Sophie's Tomorrow carries some of the warmest, most yearning melodies Hisaishi wrote for the story.

Heard as one continuous suite, the music plays less like a soundtrack and more like a symphony with a fairy tale folded inside it. For Ghibli devotees, this is the score at its most expansive, a record that rewards a quiet room and a proper listen from the first note to the last.
