The Book of Souls is Iron Maiden going bigger than ever, a 2015 epic that runs past 90 minutes and never runs out of steam, presented here as a Canadian import.

Their sixteenth studio album was recorded in Paris and co-produced by longtime collaborator Kevin Shirley and bassist and founder Steve Harris. Many of the songs were written and arranged in the studio, which gives the record a raw, live-wire energy. The band leaned into ancient Mayan imagery for the artwork and themes, adding a sense of mystery to the sprawling compositions.

"If Eternity Should Fail" opens with an eerie, atmospheric intro before Bruce Dickinson's commanding voice takes over. "Speed of Light" is a fast-paced, classic Maiden rocker, while "The Red and the Black" is a sprawling, gallop-driven epic with soaring choruses. The highlight is "Empire of the Clouds", an 18-minute Dickinson composition built around piano that tells the story of a doomed airship.

The production is huge and dramatic, with triple-guitar harmonies and Nicko McBrain's thunderous drumming driving every song.

It is a remarkable late-career achievement and one of the most ambitious records in the Maiden catalogue. Four decades in, the band still found a way to surprise their fans and push their own limits.
