Howlin' Wolf's The Real Folk Blues joins the Chess Acoustic Sounds Series on 180-gram vinyl, a 1965 gathering of singles that captures Chicago blues at its most ferocious.

Compiled from sides Wolf cut for Chess between 1956 and 1965, the album put his electric singles in front of a new, younger audience just discovering where rock and roll came from. Despite the title, there is nothing remotely folksy about it. This is the sound of a towering man with a voice like gravel in a cement mixer, backed by some of the finest musicians Chicago ever produced.

"Killing Floor" is the crown jewel, Hubert Sumlin's stinging guitar figure circling Wolf's desperate howl, and rock bands on both sides of the Atlantic would borrow from it for years. "Built For Comfort" and "Three Hundred Pounds Of Joy", both written by Willie Dixon, turn Wolf's size into swaggering, good-humored boasts, while "The Natchez Burnin'" recounts a real tragedy with haunting restraint.

Buddy Guy, Otis Spann and Dixon himself turn up across the sessions, keeping the grooves taut and menacing behind that enormous, unmistakable voice.

Few blues records hit this hard in just over half an hour, and the heavyweight pressing gives that growl all the room it needs.
