Just five songs over two sides, Love Over Gold is the most ambitious album Dire Straits ever made, the 1982 record where Mark Knopfler let his compositions stretch out like widescreen films.

Following the success of Making Movies, Knopfler took the production reins himself and pushed the band toward longer, more cinematic pieces built on atmosphere, dynamics and storytelling. The approach was a bold one for a band with a growing pop audience, but it produced some of the most immersive music of their career, with every note given room to land.

Telegraph Road is the centrepiece, a fourteen-minute epic tracing the rise and decline of a town, building from a hushed opening to a blazing guitar finale. Private Investigations is all noir mood, Knopfler's murmured narration drifting over nylon-string guitar and suspenseful marimba. Industrial Disease brings a sharp, satirical wit and a bouncy keyboard hook, while It Never Rains closes the album with a tough, rolling groove and some of Knopfler's most stinging lead work.

For fans who love the guitar playing but stay for the songwriting, this is Dire Straits at their most expansive and rewarding, a record that sounds best with the lights down and the volume up. Settle in, because Telegraph Road alone takes up most of side one.
