Dinosaur Jr. return with There Near, a 2026 album that finds J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph still cranking out fuzzed-up melodies with the same stubborn joy.

It is their first new record in five years, following Sweep It Into Space, and the sixth studio album since the classic lineup reunited. The songs came together in short, intense bursts over the course of a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, Massachusetts. The trio played almost everything themselves, with Ken Mauri adding piano and organ to fill out the edges.

Lead single and opener "Several Got Away" sets the tone, and "No Friends" and "Read The Room" keep the hooks coming as the record settles into its stride. Closer "No One's Ready" rounds things off with the kind of melodic, slightly melancholy rock they have been perfecting for decades, the guitar solos as gloriously unhurried as ever.

There is no grand reinvention here, and that is the point. Loud guitars, Barlow's melodic bass and Murph's sturdy drumming lock together with the ease of a band that knows exactly who it is, while Mascis keeps his lyrics loose and impressionistic.

Longtime fans will feel right at home, and few bands make volume sound this warm.
