Thirty years on, Cypress Hill's self-titled debut still sounds like smoke curling under a streetlight, and this 30th anniversary edition arrives on green vinyl as a limited UK import.

Released in 1991 on Ruffhouse and Columbia, the album introduced B-Real, Sen Dog and DJ Muggs to the world and laid down a blueprint that hip-hop would borrow from for years. Muggs produced the whole thing, building dusty, menacing loops from funk and soul records that sounded nothing like the polished rap dominating the radio at the time.

How I Could Just Kill a Man is the calling card, all nervy tension and B-Real's nasal, instantly recognizable delivery, with Sen Dog's gruff interjections landing like punctuation. Hand on the Pump loops a doo-wop sample into something gloriously sinister, Pigs takes aim at crooked cops, and Latin Lingo flips between English and Spanish with an ease that proudly announced the group's Latino roots.

There is humor in the haze too, along with a sense of place rooted firmly in South Gate, California, that gave the record a personality all its own and made the trio instantly identifiable.

As a document of where West Coast hip-hop was heading, it remains hard to top, and the green wax suits it rather well.
