Chet Baker's voice was as cool and unhurried as his trumpet, and Chet Baker Sings: It Could Happen To You puts it front and centre, due on clear red vinyl.

Recorded in New York in 1958 and released by Riverside that same year, the album found Baker settling into a set of standards with pianist Kenny Drew at the heart of the band. Sam Jones and George Morrow share bass duties, with Philly Joe Jones and Dannie Richmond trading the drum chair, and the rhythm section plays with a light, swinging touch that leaves plenty of room for the singer.

The material comes straight from the great American songbook. Do It the Hard Way opens with breezy confidence and the title track floats along with easy charm. Everything Happens to Me turns rueful self-pity into something tender and almost conspiratorial, and Old Devil Moon closes the record with a playful spring in its step.

Baker's singing is intimate and conversational, closer to a confidence shared across a small table than a performance, and that vulnerability is exactly why these recordings still sound so personal.

A cornerstone of late 1950s vocal jazz, this edition gives one of Baker's best-loved Riverside sessions a striking new look for the shelf.
