Will Toledo introduced Car Seat Headrest to a wider world with Teens of Style, a 2015 set of reworked bedroom gems, here with a digital download card.

Toledo had already self-released a stack of albums online, and his first release for Matador gathered favourites from that run and recorded them properly. Most of it was still made at home, with Toledo handling nearly everything himself, but the songs gained new clarity and punch while keeping the fuzzy, homemade charm that won over his early fans.

Something Soon is the breakout, a restless burst of adolescent frustration with a chorus that bursts out of the speakers. No Passion pairs a deadpan delivery with a sticky hook, while Times to Die stretches out over nearly seven minutes of slow-building release. Maud Gone is a lovely, hazy highlight, its melody drifting through layers of distortion.

Toledo's lyrics are wry, anxious and painfully self-aware, full of the confusions of growing up. The lo-fi production makes it feel like eavesdropping on someone working out who they are, one overdub at a time.

It's the perfect gateway to one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, and a reminder of how much feeling can come out of a bedroom.
