Cake's Comfort Eagle is deadpan, groovy and sharper than it lets on, pressed here on 180-gram vinyl.

Released in 2001, the Sacramento band's fourth studio album followed the radio success of Prolonging the Magic, and the band produced it themselves. That self-reliance suits them. John McCrea's dry, conversational vocals sit front and center, framed by Vince DiFiore's trumpet, chugging rhythm guitar and basslines sturdy enough to anchor a funk record.

Short Skirt / Long Jacket is the obvious standout, a wry wish-list love song riding one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs of its era. The title track Comfort Eagle skewers cult-like devotion and corporate branding with a perfectly straight face, Opera Singer opens the album as a strutting character study, and Love You Madly turns a simple declaration into a sly, sing-along groove.

Underneath the irony there is real craft, with arrangements that leave plenty of space and hooks that sneak up on you long after the needle lifts. Few bands have ever made restraint and economy sound this effortlessly cool.

Comfort Eagle remains one of the great alt-rock records of its moment, and the heavier pressing gives that rubbery low end plenty of room to bounce around your living room.
