Dense, thrilling and impossible to pin down, TV on the Radio's Return to Cookie Mountain is the 2006 album that pushed the Brooklyn band into the spotlight.

Their second full-length took the experimental streak of their debut and gave it more scale and more heart. Guitarist and producer Dave Sitek built thick walls of fuzz, loops and percussion, while Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone wove their contrasting voices together in ways that drew on doo-wop, gospel and post-punk all at once. The result sounded like nothing else in indie rock at the time.

Wolf Like Me is the breakout, a galloping, howling rocker that still sounds like it might leap off the turntable. Province features David Bowie on backing vocals, lending his voice to one of the album's most luminous moments, while I Was a Lover opens proceedings with a lurching, hip-hop-inflected beat. Hours simmers with restless, nervy energy, its layered vocals pulling against a churning groove. Even at its most abrasive, the album keeps a deep vein of soul running underneath.

On vinyl, the layers of distortion and harmony reveal new details with every spin. It is one of the defining indie records of the 2000s, and it still sounds a step ahead of almost everything around it.
