Fifty years after Edgar Allan Poe met the mixing desk, The Alan Parsons Project's debut returns as a deluxe 3LP anniversary set on 180-gram vinyl with an accompanying booklet.

Released in 1976, Tales of Mystery and Imagination was the first collaboration between engineer Alan Parsons, whose credits already included Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, and songwriter Eric Woolfson. Their idea was bold: a concept album retelling Poe's stories and poems through rock, orchestral and electronic textures, with a rotating cast of voices including Arthur Brown, John Miles and Terry Sylvester. It became an international success and set the template for everything the Project did next.

The Raven, with its pioneering vocoder-treated vocal, and the creeping menace of The Tell-Tale Heart remain highlights, while the multi-part instrumental The Fall of the House of Usher shows how far Parsons pushed orchestral arrangement into the rock album. To One in Paradise closes the original running order with a gentle, aching calm.

This set adds two further perspectives. Alongside the 1976 album sits the 1987 remix, and a third LP gathers early rough mixes, guide vocals, demos and orchestral takes from the sessions.

For prog collectors and Poe devotees, it offers a detailed look at how one of the great concept records of the 1970s was built, piece by piece.
