Six years after American Head, The Flaming Lips return with The Teardrop Throbs, their 17th studio album and a fresh start in more ways than one.

It is the band's first record for Jack White's Third Man Records, their first album away from Warner since 1990, and their first without longtime multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd since the early 1990s. Wayne Coyne leads a new circle of collaborators, with Dave Fridmann, the producer behind so many of the band's most loved records, once again behind the desk alongside Scott Booker.

Lead single "God Will Control The Werewolves" is a psych-pop ballad of soaring strings and fuzzed-out lead guitar, born from a full-moon game of hide-and-seek Coyne played with his sons in a park at dusk. He imagined it sounding like Dark Side of the Moon with Syd Barrett still in the band, and that mix of cosmic scale and childlike wonder sets the tone.

The tracklist runs from the blunt opener "Throb" to the closing "Now I Understand", with "Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell Part 2" picking up a thread from a Yoshimi-era favorite, and one long title squarely facing how to care for a loved one caught up in addiction.

Due in early 2027, it opens a new chapter for one of rock's most gloriously strange bands.
