Madness arrived fully formed on One Step Beyond..., the 1979 debut that turned a gang of north London ska fans into national favourites, offered here as a UK import pressing.

Released on Stiff Records as the 2 Tone movement swept Britain, the album mixed Jamaican ska with music hall cheek, pub singalongs and fairground swagger. Producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley kept the sound loose and lively, and the whole thing still feels like a party spilling out onto the pavement on a Saturday night.

The title track, a souped-up take on a Prince Buster instrumental, kicks things off with its famous spoken intro and honking sax. My Girl reveals a sharper, more melancholy songwriting streak, while Night Boat To Cairo rides a rolling rhythm that is practically impossible to sit still through. The Prince, meanwhile, pays tribute to the ska pioneer who also inspired the band's name.

Across 15 tracks there is barely a dull moment, with instrumentals and oddball character sketches rubbing shoulders with the hits, and a cheeky sense of humour running through the lot.

It remains one of the great British debut albums, bursting with energy and wit, and a cornerstone for any ska, new wave or 2 Tone shelf worth its salt.
