Before the microtonal experiments and marathon live sets, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard made Willoughby's Beach, a scrappy 2011 debut EP now reissued on clear, injection-molded PET.

The Melbourne crew were young and fresh off the local garage circuit when they cut these songs, and the energy is gloriously unpolished. This is the band at their most direct, all fuzzed-out riffs, surf-rock twang and shouted hooks, a rough blueprint for the wildly prolific run of albums that followed.

Opener "Danger $$$" sets the pace with wiry guitars and a rhythm section that sounds ready to burst through the garage door. "Black Tooth" leans into grimy, swaggering rock, and "Crookedile" has a snarling, reptilian strut that feels like an early hint of the creature-filled worlds to come.

The closing title track rides a sun-bleached groove, a reminder that underneath the noise this was always a band with a sharp ear for melody. Short and punchy, the EP never outstays its welcome, and every track feels like it was recorded with the amps pushed into the red.

For Gizzard completists, this is where the story starts, and the see-through disc makes it a striking piece to file beside everything that came after it.
