Elton John's Rock Of The Westies returns as an expanded 50th Anniversary Edition on blue 180-gram vinyl, celebrating the rowdy record he cut with a brand-new band.

Released in 1975, just five months after Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, it was recorded at Caribou Ranch in Colorado with Gus Dudgeon producing. The lineup was barely a month old, with Kenny Passarelli on bass, Roger Pope on drums, James Newton Howard on keyboards and Caleb Quaye joining Davey Johnstone on guitar, plus Ray Cooper on percussion. It still entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1.

The looser, funkier energy is obvious from the opening medley. Island Girl, a Caribbean-flavoured strut, topped the US singles chart, while Grow Some Funk Of Your Own swaggers on crunchy riffs and Street Kids kicks up real dust. I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun Of Robert Ford) offers a slow, aching contrast.

This expanded edition also brings out piano-and-vocal versions recorded during the original sessions, a chance to hear the songs stripped right back to Elton's voice and the piano he wrote them on.

Often overshadowed by the classics on either side of it, the album rewards a fresh listen, and this anniversary pressing makes the case with real swagger.
