Ziggy goes to America on Aladdin Sane, David Bowie's 1973 follow-up, presented here on 180 gram vinyl with all its glittering paranoia intact.

Written largely on the road during his first major US tour, the album trades the space-age myth of Ziggy Stardust for a jittery, decadent portrait of American cities. Bowie co-produced with Ken Scott, and the Spiders from Mars, with Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Woody Woodmansey, play like a band running on adrenaline and very little sleep. The lightning-bolt cover is one of the most recognisable images in rock.

The secret weapon is pianist Mike Garson, whose wild, avant-garde solo on the title track "Aladdin Sane" sounds like a cocktail lounge tumbling down a staircase. "The Jean Genie" struts on a dirty, Yardbirds-style blues riff, while "Drive-In Saturday" imagines a future where people relearn romance from old films.

"Panic in Detroit" thunders along on a Bo Diddley beat with Ronson's guitar slashing over the top, and the album closes on a lush, romantic piano ballad that shows just how far Bowie could stretch within a single record.

Equal parts glam swagger and nervous breakdown, Aladdin Sane captures Bowie at the height of his first imperial phase, and it still feels thrillingly unstable.
