The Music Roots Of Yes is a rare glimpse of four future prog legends before the band existed, fourteen songs of early recordings from 1963 to 1970.
Steve Howe, Jon Anderson, Chris Squire and Tony Kaye all spent the 1960s learning their craft in other bands, from beat groups to psychedelic pop outfits, long before they formed one of progressive rock's most ambitious groups. These recordings gather rare cuts and forgotten pearls from that period, a time capsule of garage-band energy, British beat and early studio experiments.
Revolution captures the restless spirit of its era, Twilight Time and Maybelline show a love of classic pop and rock and roll, and Mississippi Hobo hints at the blues records these young players were obsessed with.
None of it sounds like Close to the Edge, and that is the point. This is the raw material, the dance halls and recording booths where four young musicians sharpened the skills that would later fuel some of the most intricate music in rock history. For fans, it fills in a missing chapter of the story, and for collectors it is a fascinating, rarely heard curio pressed on black vinyl, with the songs split neatly across two sides.
