March 66: The Folk Rock Demos Vinyl
March 66: The Folk Rock Demos captures Tim Buckley before any of it happened, four songs recorded on the doorstep of a career that would reshape what a folk singer was even allowed to sound like.
Buckley was barely out of his teens when he cut these demos, still working in a straightforward folk-rock idiom years before he'd start dissolving genre boundaries entirely across albums like Goodbye and Hello and the jazz-inflected Happy Sad. This tape sat unheard for decades before its recent discovery, which makes it a genuine rarity rather than a repackaged outtake, the actual sound of an artist auditioning for Elektra Records right before that relationship would launch one of the most restlessly inventive careers in American songwriting. Buckley died in 1975 at just twenty-eight, and every scrap of material from this early a stage carries real weight simply for existing at all.
It Happens Every Time already carries the vocal control that would later let Buckley stretch a single word across an entire measure. I Can't See You sits comfortably in the Greenwich Village folk tradition he was about to leave behind. Grief in My Soul hints at the emotional directness that never left his writing no matter how far the music itself wandered. Sixface closes the tape on its strangest, most idiosyncratic note.
Four songs, one artist right before the leap. This is the sound of Tim Buckley's whole future about to begin.
