Reading Writing And Arithmetic Vinyl
Reading, Writing and Arithmetic is the debut that made The Sundays instant indie darlings, Harriet Wheeler's impossibly clear voice floating over David Gavurin's chiming guitar for the first time in 1990.
Produced by the band alongside Ray Shulman and engineered in part by Alan Moulder, this Rough Trade release arrived at the exact moment critics were desperate for a band to carry the Smiths' jangle-pop torch forward, and Wheeler and Gavurin, a couple writing together from the start, delivered something gentler but no less precise. The comparisons stuck immediately and somewhat unfairly, because what's actually on this record is its own thing entirely, melodies this immediate paired with lyrics considerably more melancholy than the prettiness suggests.
Here's Where the Story Ends remains the song people reach for first, a chorus so instantly memorable it topped the Billboard Alternative chart and still gets covered by artists who weren't born when it came out. Can't Be Sure carries genuine sadness underneath its jangle, and You're Not the Only One I Know moves with a brightness that almost disguises how sharp the writing actually is. I Kicked a Boy opens the album establishing Wheeler's voice as the whole point immediately.
Ranked among the best debuts of its decade for good reason. Few first albums arrive sounding this fully formed.
