Primeval: Obsession/Detachment Vinyl
Primeval: Obsession // Detachment is Tallah's third album, and it's the record where the band finally stopped worrying about which box they were supposed to fit in.
Founded in Pennsylvania in 2017 by Max Portnoy, son of Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, alongside guitarist Derrick Schneider and bassist Andrew Cooper, Tallah built their sound on genuine genre collision, nu metal and metalcore colliding with hardcore, industrial, and rap-metal cadences until critics started calling it nu-core just to have a word for it. This record pushes that instinct further than either the debut or 2022's mad-scientist concept album The Generation of Danger, adding mathcore's angularity and industrial texture on top of everything already in the mix. Recorded live with every instrument tracked simultaneously and no click track, the whole album carries a raw, unquantized urgency that studio precision usually sands away.
My Primeval Obsession and A Primeval Detachment sit as companion pieces, each one taking the album's central tension and pulling it in opposite directions, want versus withdrawal made explicit in the titles themselves. What We Know opens the record refusing any polite entry point, straight into the chaos. Undone by Fate stretches out as the album's most structurally ambitious track, mathcore's unpredictability given real room to breathe.
A band that decided genre boundaries were optional and built their most unhinged record yet on that decision.
