Bolan's Zip Gun hits fifty, and this 50th anniversary reissue restores its die-cut peek-a-boo sleeve and presses the album in Bug Glasses Baby Blue.

Released in 1975, the album landed mid-decade for a band that had helped kick off the 1970s, and its mix of space-age soul and hypnotic rock and roll repetition initially confused some critics. Marc Bolan, as ever, sensed which way the wind was blowing, nodding to the American R&B and funk that ruled the era while anticipating the punk revolution just around the corner. Keyboardist Dino Dines joined the line-up, and Gloria Jones became a permanent member on backing vocals and clavinet, a leap forward for the T. Rex sound.

Think Zinc, a frenetic highlight that Siouxsie Sioux once counted among her favourite records, became a single in Germany only, while Light of Love and Zip Gun Boogie gave the band two further classic T. Rex singles.

Once dismissed by some as a puzzling detour, it has aged into something of a hidden gem, packed with glam swagger, sleazy grooves and Bolan's endlessly quotable lyrics. The baby blue pressing nods to the distinctive glasses he wears on the back of the sleeve, a fun detail for collectors, and the die-cut artwork by John Kosh makes the whole package a joy to hold.
