Rush's Test for Echo spreads across two LPs, a 1996 album of muscular riffs and wry observation from a band still pushing at its own limits.

The trio's sixteenth studio album reunited them with co-producer Peter Collins, and it arrived after grunge and alternative rock had reshaped the musical landscape. Rather than chase trends, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart toughened their sound. Peart had recently reworked his drumming technique under jazz teacher Freddie Gruber, and his lyrics turn a skeptical eye on media saturation, faith and the strange new world of the internet.

The title track opens with a brooding build and a pointed lyric about voyeuristic television culture, while "Driven" is a showcase for Lee's layered, rumbling bass work. "Half the World" packs a melodic punch into less than four minutes, one of the band's most concise songs of the decade, and "Virtuality" takes on online life with a heavy, chugging groove that feels prescient now. Lifeson's guitars are thick and crunchy throughout, giving the record real weight.

It would be the last Rush album for six years, which lends it a special place in the catalogue. Test for Echo is a rewarding reminder of a band still sharpening its craft more than two decades into its career.
