Time Stands Still / Le temps s'arrête is Paul Osborne's Project Gemini finding a French voice to carry his cinematic psych rock somewhere more romantic than he's taken it before.
The pair had already crossed paths on Osborne's 2024 album Colours & Light, where Wendy Martinez, of the psych-girl group Gloria, guested on a couple of tracks and revealed just how well their sensibilities lined up. This EP started as an accident, a scrapped instrumental library record that Osborne sent to Martinez piece by piece from a distance, her writing melodies and French lyrics from her home outside Lyon and sending them back. What emerged draws directly on French soundtrack composers like François de Roubaix and Michel Colombier, filtered through Martinez's own chanson and new wave instincts, released this year on Mr Bongo.
Je n'ai plus peur opens with real swagger, a psych-funk strut that tips its hat to Gainsbourg's more left-field material. Âme contre âme plays like the theme from a film that was never made, gorgeous and faintly sinister at once. The Crawler lets Martinez use her voice purely as texture while Osborne's bass takes the lead, and Ce qui est intact closes things on ghostly spoken word, half performance piece, half incantation.
Nostalgic and entirely new in the same breath. That balance is harder to pull off than it sounds here.
