Nuevos Senderos is where Olga Tañón, already Puerto Rico's reigning merengue queen, stepped away from the dance floor long enough to make history a different way.
By 1996 Tañón had spent a decade building her reputation as La Mujer de Fuego, merengue's most electrifying female voice, but this fourth album leans toward ballads instead, most of it written and produced by Marco Antonio Solís, whose gift for aching, melodramatic romanticism suited her voice just as well as anything faster ever had. The gamble paid off in a way nobody quite expected: Nuevos Senderos made her the first female Puerto Rican artist certified gold in the United States, proof that her voice never actually needed the tempo to carry a room.
¡Basta Ya! is the reason this record still gets played, a ballad so direct in its refusal that it became Tañón's first number one on the Billboard Latin chart, Solís' writing giving her something to genuinely sink into rather than just perform. Mi Eterno Amor Secreto opens the album at its most vulnerable, five minutes of slow-building devotion. El Daño Que Me Haces carries real hurt without tipping into melodrama, and No Te Vas closes things with quiet, unresolved longing.
New paths, exactly as the title promised. This is the record where the fire learned how to simmer.
