A Past Sense finds Mr. Käfer stepping out from behind his lo-fi reputation, orange vinyl and fourteen tracks tracing how memory quietly rewrites who we think we are.

Käfer built his name on mood over spectacle, jazz-tinged instrumental hip-hop released through Melting Pot Music on records like Lost Reflections and Orientation, the kind of beats made for headphones and late nights rather than crowds. This is his sixth project for the label and his most outward-facing yet, trading the bedroom-producer aesthetic for something genuinely collaborative, hip-hop and soul folded together with North African rhythm patterns and a rotating cast of vocalists pulled from Berlin, Vienna, Cologne, and the US.

Green Roses brings in Novine and Leavv for the album's most gorgeous vocal turn, warm and unhurried. Melange pairs YAN NAY and Franz Bumm over a groove that keeps shifting its centre of gravity, and Sun Gazing lets the instrumental side breathe on its own, no vocalist needed to carry the mood. Across all fourteen tracks, the through-line is the same question asked from different angles, how much distance sits between who you were and who you've become.

Photographer Robert Winter's visuals lean into that same nostalgic, forward-looking tension. Käfer has never sounded this expansive.
