OIIIIO is More Than John's debut album, cut live in a single day at Stockholm's legendary Riksmixningsverket studio, the room Benny Andersson built and where the whole thing was captured with as few takes and edits as the songs could get away with.
John Engdahl walked into that session having only just met his engineer and producer, Linn Fijal, the day before, and the record carries exactly the nervous, present quality that comes from choosing not to over-rehearse a debut. The songs sit comfortably alongside the reference points that made this a Record Store Day release worth watching for, Nick Drake's hushed fingerpicking, José González's patient melancholy, Sufjan Stevens' knack for turning a small observation into something devastating. Nothing here reaches for polish it didn't earn honestly in the room that day.
Go Anywhere carries the clearest sense of restless, searching energy, acoustic guitar doing most of the emotional lifting. The record's reinterpretation of Wild Mountain Thyme, a traditional folk song that's been passed down and rearranged for centuries, becomes something quieter and more personal in Engdahl's hands, proof he can inhabit someone else's song as convincingly as his own.
A debut recorded in one day, in one of music's most storied rooms, and it sounds like every bit of that pressure went into making the songs feel more honest rather than more perfect.
