Evilive is the Misfits at their most feral, a blast of horror punk caught on stage in 1981, Glenn Danzig howling over buzzsaw guitars for a crowd ready to riot.

It first surfaced in 1982 as a seven-song EP on Plan 9, the band's own label, and was expanded into this twelve-track LP in 1987, long after the original lineup had split. That timing made it a crucial document for a generation of fans who discovered the band too late to see them in a sweaty club.

"20 Eyes" and "Horror Business" tear past in a blur, Danzig's croon cutting through the murk like a B-movie siren. "Astro Zombies" keeps its sing-along menace intact, and "We Are 138" closes the set with a chant-along assist from Henry Rollins, then fronting Black Flag.

The sound is raw and unpolished, and that is precisely the point. This is a band from Lodi, New Jersey playing loud, fast and slightly unhinged, with drive-in horror imagery and hooks that stick like stage blood. Songs that sound tight on the studio records come out here faster and nastier, propelled by a rhythm section that never once eases off the throttle.

For any punk shelf, Evilive is the closest thing to standing in the pit in 1981, minus the bruises.
