Praise Animal is Max Pope's second album, eight tracks about the version of yourself that shows up when the manners come off.
Pope had already spent years as other people's secret weapon, writing and playing guitar for Mahalia, Yussef Dayes, and Tom Misch, which is a strange apprenticeship for someone this clearly capable of carrying his own record. His debut, Counting Sheep, was the smooth introduction. This one, written and co-produced with Riley Macintyre, digs into rawer material on purpose, the instinctive, sometimes self-sabotaging animal that sits underneath politeness, and the title works both ways, naming that inner creature and society's hunger to be validated for having one at all. Recorded at London's Church Studios, it's a genuine leap in scope from what came before.
One Foot in Front of the Other carries the album's most direct emotional weight, guitar work doing as much talking as the lyrics. Love Someone Self Destruct is the record's rawest title and delivers on it, jagged blues colliding with woozy electronics. Home settles into something warmer and more soulful, and Love Is Dead closes the record on its bleakest, most cinematic note.
Eight songs about ego, vulnerability, and inherited patterns, delivered by someone who has spent years making other people's records sound this good and finally turned the attention on himself.
