Uptown Special is the sound of a producer finally stepping into the spotlight, a glossy, funk-drenched pop album that gave Mark Ronson his first UK number one.
Released in 2015, it also reached the US top five, powered by the unstoppable single Uptown Funk with Bruno Mars. Ronson built the record with a deep bench of collaborators, including Stevie Wonder, Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, Jeff Bhasker and Mystikal, and even brought in novelist Michael Chabon, who wrote lyrics for nine of its eleven songs, an unusual twist for a funk record.
Uptown Funk is the strut everyone knows, Daffodils lets Kevin Parker's psychedelic touch drift through a slinky groove, Feel Right brings Mystikal's rasping bark to a frantic, horn-driven rush, and Summer Breaking glows with an easy, sunlit swing.
What ties it together is craft. Ronson has a producer's ear for texture, rhythm and a killer hook, and the album moves from pop to R&B to old-school funk without losing its pulse, with almost every song sounding like it could have been a single. A decade on, it still sounds sharp, sleek and joyful, and the pressing is a fine way to hear those drums, horns and basslines at full strength.
